Book Studying the Coast Salish Woolly Dog Selected for a Historical Writing Award

The Teachings of Mutton: A Coast Salish Woolly Dog (Harbour Publishing) was awarded the second runner up prize in the British Columbia Historical Federation Historic Writing Awards. The BCHF Historical Writing Awards celebrate outstanding books that contribute significantly to the study, interpretation, and preservation of British Columbia’s past.

The awards were presented at the Federation’s Annual Gala in Vancouver, recognizing authors whose research, storytelling, and commitment to historical accuracy enrich the province’s cultural record. Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa was present to receive the award on behalf of her fellow co-authors.

Mutton is a richly illustrated study of the Coast Salish woolly dog and its role in Indigenous weaving traditions. Drawing on the knowledge of Salish elders and artists, the book offers new insight into pre contact material culture and the revival of traditional practices.
