Zeballos, 1940s. Named for Ciriaco Cevallos, a 1791 Spanish explorer, the west Vancouver Island townsite was established in 1935-36 because of a gold rush. Its street closest to the ocean was often inundated at high tide. A skiff would transport new arrivals to the foreshore where volunteers would piggyback them to dry land. Collection of Zeballos Heritage Museum.
